Speel Tabbed United Soccer Coaches Goalkeepers to Watch


DURHAM, N.C. – Duke graduate goalkeeper Wessel Speel was named one of six goalkeepers by the United Soccer Coaches 2024 Preseason Players to Watch on Thursday afternoon.
 
Speel, a 6-foot-7 graduate transfer from Hofstra, joins the Blue Devils for the 2024 campaign, following a successful career. In 2023, the Utrecht, The Netherlands, native posted a 14-3-5 record for the Pride, limiting opponents to 0.80 goals against average, as Hofstra advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament, falling to North Carolina in penalty kicks.
 
The 2023 Second Team United Soccer Coaches All-Region recipient and United Soccer Coaches Second Team Scholar All-American, has appeared in 75 games throughout his career, registering 227 saves and posting a goals against average of 0.97. He has recorded 14-plus victories in three of the four full seasons he saw action, including an 18-win campaign in 2021, which saw Hofstra fall in the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
 
During his time with the Pride, Speel accumulated a 51-11-13 overall record in goal, collecting 25 clean sheets. He posted a career-high nine shutouts in 2023, facing 249 shots during the year.
 
Speel joins Trace Alphin (Wake Forest), Luis Castillo (Oregon State), Zac Kelly (Michigan State), Luke Pruter (UC Irvine) and Eric Waltz (University of San Francsico), as the six Men’s Players to Watch at the goalkeeper position.
