PARIS, France – Sunday’s Olympic action included four different sports for those with Gator connections.

Women’s Basketball – Spain 90, China 89 OT

Spain team opened Olympic action with a 90-89 overtime win over China.
 
China held a 37-33 lead at halftime and held a six-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Spain turned in a game-high 23 points in the final quarter as the teams went into overtime tied at 76.
 
Spain scored first and never trailed in overtime.  Leonor Rodriguez’s free throw with 13 seconds remaining gave Spain a three-point lead. China could only manage a layup by Li Yueru with five seconds left as Spain took the one-point win.
 
Andrea Vilaro, a member of Florida’s 2011-12 team, did not appear in Sunday’s game.

Spain is back in action Wednesday, July 31 to continue Group A play.

Soccer – Canada 2, France 1
Canada stunned host France with a late goal in stoppage time to take a 2-1 win at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne, France.
 
France took a 1-0 lead into halftime. Marie-Antoinette Katoto found enough space to slot the ball in from 15 yards in the 43rd minute.
 
Gator grad Adriana Leon entered the match at halftime.
 
Canada tied the match in the 57th minute. Leon crashed the box to try to get a foot on Ashley Lawrence’s cross. France’s goalkeeper Pauline Peyraud-Magnin came off her line to try to make the stop but her deflection was put in by Jessie Fleming. Peyraud-Magnin suffered a head injury on the play and was replaced by Constance Picaud.
 
Due to the injury, more than 13 minutes of stoppage time was added. Canada scored the go-ahead goal in the 11th minute of stoppage. Jordyn Huitema took a shot at the top of the box off a cross from Leon. Picaud made the initial save but the rebound rolled to the feet of Vanessa Gilles, who scored on a left-footed shot that hit the near post and kicked in to give Canada the final margin.
