Manchester United have reportedly had a big of £30m rejected for Bayern Munich centre-back Matthijs de Ligt

United have been amongst the Premier League‘s busiest recruiters during the summer transfer market with both Joshua Zirkzee and defender Leny Yoro moving to Old Trafford.

Erik ten Hag is keen to be reunited with his former Ajax captain De Ligt and publicly declared United’s interest in the centre-back ahead of their pre-season win over Rangers on Friday.

And Bild’s Head of Football Christian Falk claims United made a first offer for the defender.

He tweeted: ‘Manchester United offer €35 Mio (£30m) for Matthijs de Ligt. FC Bayern has rejected the offer.’

‘FC Bayern demand €50 Mio (£42m) plus add-ons. Bayern have to sell players to buy new players. Negotiations between the clubs continue.’

It has previously been reported that De Ligt has agreed personal terms with the Manchester side as Ten Hag seeks to add a second Dutch signing of the summer, but there is currently no agreement between the two clubs.

De Ligt is currently enjoying an extended break following the Netherlands’ participation in Euro 2024 – despite failing to feature in a single game at the tournament.

The 24-year-old has endured mixed fortunes since joining Bayern from Juventus two-years ago in a deal believed to be worth around £68m.

United are keen to offer the combative defender a long-term contract at the club as a sign of investment in a player seeking to get back to his best following a mixed few years.
