Manchester City and Barcelona have been handed an extension to trigger the release clause in Dani Olmo’s RB Leipzig contract, reports have revealed.
Olmo has emerged as a target for several top clubs this summer, including Barcelona, who 90min understands made a verbal offer for the talented midfielder not too long ago, while City are also monitoring him.
Barcelona’s financial limitations mean they cannot afford Olmo’s €60m (£51m) release clause up front and would prefer a different payment structure, though this would potentially pave the way for City to secure the 26-year-old’s signature with a more favourable offer to Leipzig.
City’s midfield requires reinforcement amid ongoing speculation surrounding the futures of Kevin De Bruyne, who is out of contract in 2025, and Bernardo Silva.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Olmo’s release clause was set to expire on 15 July. However, because he is still with Spain at Euro 2024 ahead of the final on Sunday, this has been pushed back to 20 July instead.
Olmo is gearing up to face City’s Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Phil Foden in the final in Berlin this weekend, where Spain will clash with England.
He and Barca’s Lamine Yamal both found the net as La Roja triumphed 2-1 against tournament favourites France in their semi-final on Tuesday.
Despite starting on the bench for three of Spain’s first four games, Olmo has contributed an impressive total of three goals and two assists at this summer’s tournament – more than any other player.
Olmo is in line to start the final having been drafted in as a replacement for the injured Pedri, whose tournament came to an end after suffering a knee sprain early on in their quarter-final victory against Germany.
