Gareth Southgate ‘makes Luke Shaw decision’ ahead of Euro 2024 semi-final clash

Luke Shaw will once again be forced to watch England’s Euro 2024 campaign from the bench with Kieran Trippier expected to start in his place, according to reports.

The Manchester United defender was able to play 42 minutes of his nation’s quarter-final win over Switzerland on Saturday – marking his first appearance on the pitch since February. His involvement immediately brought balance to England’s left side, something Gareth Southgate’s side have lacked since their tournament opener.

As the only naturally left-footed defender in the squad, fans have long called for Shaw’s return, only to be met by constant setbacks and growing injuries, and Southgate is believed to still have concerns about the left-back’s ability to play significant minutes.

As per reports from Sky Sports, Southgate will opt to continue starting Kieran Trippier due to lasting concerns over Shaw’s fitness, despite the latter’s insistence that he is fit enough to play the full 90 minutes.

Trippier has started all five of England’s games at the tournament so far in the left-back position and appears set to continue that streak, with Southgate said to believe that his defensive instincts could be vital against attacking players such as Denzel Dumfries in the semi-final.

Speaking before the fixture, the boss said: “He [Shaw] gives us balance. But Kieran Trippier has done a fantastic job. He’s played in so many important nights for us over the last seven or eight years.

“But also around the squad and how he is. We’re very fortunate to have him.”

England will return to action on Wednesday night when they face the Netherlands. A victory would see them qualify for their second successive Euro 2024 final.
