Liya Brooks with Jamaica for Friendlies in Brazil

RECIFE, Brazil – Washington State women’s soccer redshirt-freshman Liya Brooks was named to the 23-athlete Jamaican National Team roster for a pair of upcoming friendly matches against Brazil, the Jamaican Football Federation (J.F.F.) announced. Brooks, who represented Jamaica at the 2023 FIFA World Cup last summer, is traveling with the ‘Reggae Girlz’ in Brazil for matches Saturday, June 1, and Tuesday, June 4.

The Jamaican National Team will face the reigning South American CONMEBOL champions at 1 p.m. (9 a.m. PT) Saturday, June 1 at Itaipava Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil. The national teams will travel to Salvador, Brazil for a rematch Tuesday, June 4 at Arena Fonte Nova with kickoff scheduled for 4 p.m. (12 p.m. PT).

Hailing from Eugene, Ore., Brooks became an established member of the Jamaican youth system over the past three years. The young goalkeeper most recently was part of the Jamaican roster through Olympic qualifying. She also competed in the U-20 CONCACAF Championships, after going undefeated with three clean sheets in the qualifying competition in the fall of 2022.

June’s friendlies are part of the larger FIFA women’s football calendar, which sets windows for designated national team fixtures to avoid disruption with club competition. The U.S. Women’s National Team, Canada, Mexico, Ecuador, Haiti, Guatemala, and Aruba are other CONCACAF nations with friendlies during this national team window.

Brooks, who redshirted the 2023 season in Pullman, traveled to Australia and New Zealand last summer for her first World Cup, and J.F.F.’s second all-time appearance in the global tournament. The Reggae Girlz made history with the federation’s first victory at the World Cup, qualifying out of Group F with a win over Panama.

Brooks will return to Pullman later this summer to join the Cougars in preparation for the 2024 season, beginning Thursday, August 15 at Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana.
