Erik ten Hag has reportedly ordered the Manchester United squad to report for pre-season training ‘two weeks early’.

The Ajax manager is set to move to the Premier League club at the end of the season, replacing interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the helm.

He is inheriting an underachieving team who have endured a woeful campaign after missing out on Champions League qualification.

It promises to be a busy summer transfer window for the Red Devils as Ten Hag reportedly plans a huge squad overhaul.

According to the Mirror, the Dutchman has asked his players to return for pre-season on June 20, two weeks prior to the originally planned date, July 4.

He is planning ‘two weeks of rigorous fitness work’ as he looks to integrate his style of play into the minds of the players.

After a disappointing campaign, Ten Hag is looking to get the players in shape for the start of the 2022/23 Premier League season.

The 52-year-old is said to be ‘unimpressed with the squad’s fitness levels’ which he feels has led to many of their poor results in 21/22.

Ten Hag is yet to decide who his assistant manager at Old Trafford will be, with his former PSV colleague Fred Rutten rejecting the job offer.

And United legend Rio Ferdinand says he was shocked to hear that Rutten had turned them down but admits it is a sign of the times at the club.

Speaking on Vibe with Five, Ferdinand said: “There’s loads of things that are wrong at Man United at the moment.

“We’ve seen even yesterday in the papers saying the PSV number two coach has declined to come to Man United and be a coach. This is unheard of.

“We’re in territory we’ve never been in before. A job comes up at Manchester United [in the past], there would be queues round the block for people to take the job!

“Now there’s queues of people saying, ‘You know what, that might be a train you don’t get on’. It’s crazy.”
