Huntsville City FC Signs Defender Joel Sangwa and Midfielder Brennan Creek

Huntsville, Ala. – Huntsville City Football Club announced today the signings of defender Joel Sangwa and midfielder Brennan Creek. The new signings add to the group of players from Huntsville City FC, Nashville SC, and The Gold Mine Academy, Nashville SC’s youth academy, who will represent the Boys in Blue in the 2024 MLS NEXT Pro Season.

“Joel has impressed us from day one of preseason,” says Matt Cairns, Huntsville City FC Director of Soccer Operations. “His college journey shows his drive and commitment to the game of soccer. His leadership and quality are clear to see, and we’re delighted to sign him in Huntsville.

“We are delighted to sign Brennan in Huntsville,” adds Cairns. “He has the key characteristics we look for in a midfielder. Having watched him closely in college at Kentucky and seeing him in our preseason, we’re confident he will make a great impact on our group this season.”

Sangwa comes to Huntsville after two seasons at the University of Akron. The 24-year-old started all 18 games for the Zips in 2023, recording a goal and two assists and helping lead the team to a Big East-best 10 shutouts. His performance earned him a Big East Defensive Player of the Week award on Aug. 28 and an invitation to the MLS College Showcase. Before joining Akron, Sangwa spent two seasons at Iowa Western Community College, helping the Reivers to a 20-1-1 record en route to a national championship in 2021 along with a national championship runner up performance in 2020.

Creek comes to Huntsville after finishing his college career at the University of Kentucky. The midfielder appeared in 41 matches for the Wildcats across 2022 and 2023, recording five assists and 14 shots in that time. Before his time at Kentucky, Creek spent three years at Western Michigan University, where he was a mainstay for the Broncos, seeing action in 45 matches, while scoring five goals and recording 13 assists.

Both Creek and Sangwa will be available to play in the club’s season opening match on Saturday, March 16 at Chattanooga FC at 2 p.m. CT.
