March 12, 2024 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL – Goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois, defender Joel Waterman, as well as midfielders Mathieu Choinière and Samuel Piette were called up to the Canadian national team on Tuesday. With a total of four players, CF Montréal have the most players called up by Canada during this international window.
Canada will face Trinidad and Tobago in a play-off game for the CONMEBOL 2024 Copa America on March 23 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
The 2023-2024 Concacaf Nations League served as a qualifying tournament for Concacaf teams ahead of Copa América. The winners of the Concacaf Nations League quarter-finals (USA, Jamaica, Panama and Mexico) qualified directly for the prestigious South American tournament, while the losers (Canada, Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Honduras) will take part in a single elimination qualifying phase.
This will be Jonathan Sirois’ first national team camp. The 22-year-old goalkeeper was previously included in Canada’s preliminary squad for the 2022-2023 Concacaf Nations League finals in May 2023.
Waterman will be making his return to Les Rouges for the first time since his call-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. The Langley, British Columbia native has two caps and 109 minutes with Canada.
This will be Choinière’s third camp with the national team. The 25-year-old midfielder got his first minutes with Canada when he was last called up for the defeat in Japan.
Piette didn’t play in his last call-up, watching from the bench as Canada was eliminated in the two-legged Nations League quarter-final series against Jamaica. The Repentigny native played 61 minutes in a 4-1 loss to Japan in Niigata on October 13. Piette has 67 caps for Canada since making his debut in 2012.
