February 15, 2024 – National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) – Bay FC News Release
San Francisco – Bay FC, the Bay Area’s new women’s professional soccer franchise and a member of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), have signed defender and No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NWSL Draft Savy King to a three-year contract through the 2026 season, the club announced today.
“Savy for us is someone that we see as being the future of our organization and of this league,” said Bay FC Head Coach Albertin Montoya. “As a top young player, she has not only the physical qualities but also brings composure and sophistication to her game along with the technical components and tactical understanding to be one of the best players in this league. We are excited to have her on our team.”
King became the third-youngest draftee in NWSL history (18 years, 11 months) when she was picked by Bay FC after completing her freshman year at the University of North Carolina. In one season with the Tar Heels, she helped guide the team to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament. Individually, she earned United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Second Team, All-ACC Second Team and ACC All-Freshman Team honors in 2023. She was one of four players to start all 23 matches, and the only freshman. King logged a team-high 2,030 minutes and played the full 90 minutes in 19 of her 23 games.
One of five nominees for 2023 U.S. Soccer Young Female Player of the Year, she captained the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team at the Concacaf U-20 Championship, helping the team qualify for the 2024 U-20 FIFA Women’s World Cup. King was also part of the U-17s squad that won the 2022 Concacaf Women’s U-17 Championship. At the 2022 U-17 FIFA Women’s World Cup, King started three of the team’s four matches, including in the quarterfinal round against Nigeria.
