January 22, 2024 – Major League Soccer (MLS) – St. Louis City SC News Release
ST. LOUIS – St. Louis CITY SC loaned St. Louis native Miguel Perez to USL-side Birmingham Legion FC. CITY SC have the option to recall Perez anytime throughout the season.
“Miguel showed immense progression in his first professional season and we want to see him gain more minutes in a competitive league like USL for his growth,” said Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel. “Miggy continues to be one of our local success stories after scouting him at a camp in Booneville, bringing him into our academy system and then seeing him improve enough to earn a spot on the first team. Our fans have enjoyed watching him grow and develop his skills and, as a club, we want to ensure he has every opportunity to continue his journey by getting more playing time. We wish him all the best in Birmingham and can’t wait to see how he progresses throughout the year.”
Perez, 18, gained a ton of experience in his first full season at the MLS level, featuring in 18 matches across all competitions. He made his senior team debut in CITY SC’s season-opening win at Austin FC and followed up with his first career MLS start at the Portland Timbers two matches later.
Three days after he graduated from Pattonville High School, Perez captured the hearts of St. Louisians by recording CITY SC’s first goal by a homegrown in an MLS regular-season game on May 28. Perez also scored in CITY SC’s fourth-round Open Cup match against Chicago on May 10.
Perez quickly rose within the St. Louis system since arriving in 2021. Following a strong Academy season in 2021, the St. Louis midfielder split time between the Academy and St. Louis CITY SC’s MLS NEXT Pro side, CITY2, in 2022. For CITY2, he appeared in seven matches, making two starts. The midfielder made seven appearances for the Academy’s UPSL squad, including a two-goal performance in the team’s 5-4 loss in the conference playoff semifinals.
