Tech drops clash with No. 18 Virginia, 3-0

BLACKSBURG – From one of No. 18 Virginia’s first touches of the game, it seemed as if it might not be Virginia Tech’s night on Friday, and so was the case, as the Cavaliers claimed a 3-0 victory.

The Hokies started the game with a two-minute spell of possession, however a lapse at the back allowed the ACC’s third-leading scorer Stephen Annor to control the ball and catch Timi Adams off his line for a goal in the third minute.

Virginia doubled its lead in the 22nd minute off a Daniel Mangarov freekick that was granted a few yards outside the box on what seemed to be a fair challenge from a tracking Tech midfielder.

Tech went into the break trailing 2-0, while also trailing in the shot tally, 7-5.

The game evened out again in opportunities and possession in the second half, as the Hokies posted eight shots.

However, Virginia found the one goal in the second half – a second score by Annor in the 59th minute.

Despite the result, Tech’s Adams posted a career high six saves against the 18th-ranked Cavaliers.

The Hokies will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 24 against Radford at 6 p.m. Prior to the game, Virginia Tech will honor its seniors.
