WHAT TO WATCH FOR

The Greenville Triumph is back on the road this weekend, facing Lexington SC just 72 hours after its last match. In preparation for its first-ever Kentucky matchup, Greenville will look to continue the momentum from a resounding 3-0 win over Central Valley on April 19th to earn the club’s first points of the 2023 season. Lucas Coutinho tallied two goals and an assist, while Noah Pilato recorded his second-consecutive goal in a game, and Jared Mazzola earned his first professional shutout in GTSC’s second home match at Paladin Stadium.

Greenville’s stout performance on Wednesday came despite injury issues that have affected the club’s start to the season. Without any healthy right backs, the Triumph morphed midfielder, Tevin Shaw into an outside back in order to run a 4-3-3 on Wednesday. Shaw had a standout performance in the win, and, with no improvements to the injury report, he could be in line to make another appearance in Greenville’s backline on Saturday. On the other side of the defense, 18-year-old academy player Jonah Biggar, looked like a veteran shutting down the opposite flank for Greenville. GTSC will need to continue to shore up the defense going into a very athletic Lexington team.

The League One newcomers have had a slow start, but recently grabbed their first win in club history with a victory over South Georgia Tormenta. Now four matches into the season, Lexington has registered a pair of 2-1 losses against One Knox and NCFC, and a scoreless draw versus Forward Madison. This will be the first time the clubs meet, but Greenville is already familiar with many of Lexington’s players. Former Triumph players Don Smart, Nico Brown, Cesar Murillo and 2022 trialist, Khalid Balogun have all joined the Kentucky side for its inaugural season.
