Man Utd legend Rio Ferdinand has urged the Glazers to become more “open and transparent” with fans if they decide not to sell the club.
There have been contrasting reports in the last 24 hours about whether the Glazers will end up selling the Red Devils or take a minority investment.
On Tuesday, ESPN reporter Mark Ogden claimed that there are “at least four investment groups that are looking to offer them a minority investment” instead of a full sale.
Ogden added: “The Glazers, I’ve been told, believe that if they can hold onto the club for another seven, eight years, and they can develop it – they develop the stadium and the team to make it maybe worth twice as much as what it is now. Potentially £10billion.”
According to Gary Neville, and no doubt many Man Utd supporters, that would be the “nightmare scenario” but another report today has given them hope.
The Daily Mail insisted that ‘a full sale remains the likeliest outcome’ ahead of a third deadline for bids with the ‘prospect of United becoming a toxic brand should the owners choose not to sell is likely to be one factor under consideration’.
When asked what the reaction would be like from Man Utd fans if the Glazers refused to sell, Ferdinand told the Stretford Paddock podcast: “I don’t think the fanbase will be happy. Too much has gone on and been let out, it’s too close to a new beginning that a lot of the fans have wanted, to then go back again.
“If you’re getting offered £4-6billion – that’s a big mark up on your investment at the beginning. Fans are saying ‘you’re not wanted here by the majority of the fanbase, you’re getting a massive lump on your way out. Shake our hands and ride off into the sunset’.”
On how they can improve their relationship with supporters, Ferdinand added: “I’ve always said this, if they communicated with the fan base much better, much more clearer, open and transparent.
“They might have a better reaction from the fans. Or at least a bit of back and forth with the fans just to humanise the situation because they’re so far removed from the fanbase and the fans understanding or knowing where they are with things.
“I would urge them to speak to the fans, man. Or at least put a face to these words.”
