SEASIDE, Calif. – Monterey Bay F.C. was explosive in the attack in the Club’s 4-2 victory over New Mexico United on the weekend. With three goal contributions apiece, forwards Christian Volesky and Sam Gleadle have been named to the USL Championship Team of the Week for Week 5 of the 2023 regular season. In addition, midfielder Mobi Fehr has been named to the Team of the Week bench.
The USL Championship’s Player of the Week recorded two goals and an assist against New Mexico, his first two regular season goals of the 2023 campaign. Volesky connected on 12 of his 18 passes, won 10 total duels, drew two fouls, and blocked a shot. Including the Club’s midweek U.S. Open Cup win over Central Valley Fuego FC, Volesky has now contributed to five of the Union’s last seven goals in all competitions.
Gleadle earns Team of the Week honors with a goal and two assists of his own to spotlight his impressive display over the weekend. After assisting on the Union’s opening goal in the 33rd minute, Gleadle scored a goal of his own seven minutes later to take a first half lead that the Union would never let go of. However, it was the English forward’s highlight-reel, backheel assist in the 71st minute of the match to Volesky that put the stamp on his performance. The assist/goal combo even featured in ESPN FC’s Futbol Americas’ Top 10 Goals from the Weekend, coming in at number seven.
Fehr’s top-18 performance included the game-winning assist to Volesky five minutes into the second half and two chances created. On his assist, Fehr jumped the passing lane before immediately threading the needle between two New Mexico defenders with a perfectly weighted ball to play Volesky in on goal. In total, Fehr recorded an 86.2% passing accuracy, won all three of his duels, and added two interceptions and a tackle.
