DURHAM — Duke women’s soccer program will welcome another standout recruiting class to the mix in 2023 as head coach Robbie Church and his staff landed the No. 6 overall class. During the spring, GoDuke.com will be spotlighting each of the eight newcomers.
The fifth incoming freshman that will be spotlighted is Phoebe Goldthwaite, who is a 5-7 midfielder from Durham, N.C. She attends Durham Academy and plays for the NC Courage Girls Development Academy.
Goldthwaite is a three-time Mid-Atlantic First Team selection and is rated as the No. 35 player in the 2023 class by TopDrawerSoccer. She is also listed as the No. 6 player in the South Atlantic region and 15th-best midfielder in the class. Goldthwaite has two sisters that also play women’s soccer in the ACC as Baylor is a freshman at Wake Forest and Peyton is a junior at Virginia.
GoDuke.com: What made you choose Duke?
Phoebe Goldthwaite: I chose Duke because I wanted to play at the highest level of soccer, but also push myself academically. The challenge of competing in the hardest conference and against some of the best players was something that I desired and going Duke would allow me to do just that. I absolutely love the culture within the team and knew that Duke would be a place where I could become the best version of myself both as a player and a student.
GD: Tell us about your soccer game and what you hope to bring to Duke?
PG: I hope to bring an energy to the field and my teammates in all aspects of the game, but particularly the attack.
GD: Favorite NWSL Player?
PG: Debinha
GD: Most excited for at Duke (soccer and not soccer)?
PG: The food hall and meeting new people as well as getting to play in the toughest conference and compete in the NCAA Tournament
GD: What is a fun fact/skill/talent people may not know about you?
PG: I did Taekwondo for four years and I used to be really good at making balloon animals
GD: Who are your biggest inspirations on and off the pitch?
PG: My mom and dad are my biggest inspirations off the field and Messi is my biggest inspiration on the field
GD: What is your proudest moment on the soccer field so far?
PG: I used to struggle mentally in terms of my soccer mindset and so overcoming that has taken a lot of work but I am very proud that I have.
