TUCSON – The Wolfpack softball team dropped its final game of the Candrea Classic to Arizona, 15-1 Sunday afternoon.
In the top of the first with two outs, freshman utility player MaKayla Marbury stepped up to the plate. After being thrown a ball and then a strike, she slammed a ball past the center field fence to record the Pack’s first homer of the season and the first of her collegiate career.
Fellow freshman Madison Inscoe was fourth in the batting order and slapped a ball to right field for her second hit of the weekend.
The Wildcats recorded five hits in the bottom of the first, but only crossed home twice. The bases were loaded and Arizona had two outs when Sophia Carroll slapped a ball to right center field. But NC State senior Rebecca Murray was on a mission and got the out to end the inning.
The Pack struggled to regain momentum after Arizona took a 8-1 lead to end the third inning.
Arizona’s Carlie Scoupin went on to hit a three RBI home run with two outs in the bottom of the fourth to help the Wildcats increase the lead.
Play wrapped up after the top of the fifth due to Arizona taking a lead of eight or more runs.
