Arsenal are set to trigger a two-year contract extension for 19-year-old starlet Charlie Patino with Barcelona among the European giants monitoring the teenager’s situation

  • Arsenal are expected to trigger Charlie Patino’s contract extension this week
  • The 19-year-old midfielder is currently on loan at Championship side Blackpool
  • The Gunners have the option to keep the rising youngster for a further two years
  • Patino scored on his Arsenal debut in a 5-1 Carabao Cup win over Sunderland

Arsenal are expected to trigger Charlie Patino’s contract extension this week but it’s understood no formal conversations have taken place over a new, long-term deal for the teenager.

The midfielder, 19, is currently building senior experience on loan at Championship side Blackpool, with his current contract set to expire at the end of the season.

Arsenal have the option to keep him for a further two years, provided they exercise it in the very near future.

The Premier League leaders are understood to have indicated that they will, with a number of clubs across England and Europe monitoring the 19-year-old.

But talks have yet to begin over the long-term future of Patino, who signed his first professional contract in 2020.

The academy graduate made his first-team debut last year, scoring against Sunderland in the Carabao Cup. He has since impressed at Blackpool and briefly returned to Arsenal during the World Cup break.

His future is among several items on the club’s to-do list. They are currently working on rewarding William Saliba, Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka with new deals, while the recent injury to Gabriel Jesus could force Arsenal into the market for a new striker in January.

They are eyeing a new winger, with Shakhtar Donestk’s Mykhaylo Mudryk believed to be a primary target.

Mikel Arteta and sporting director Edu were both in the United States recently to see owner Stan Kroenke.
