Cooper Recognized as MAC Hermann Trophy Finalist

DURHAM – For the first time in school history, a Duke women’s soccer standout has been recognized as a MAC Hermann Trophy finalist as the United Soccer Coaches and the Missouri Athletic Club (MAC) announced Blue Devil sophomore Michelle Cooper was one of three finalists on Thursday.

The finalists along with Cooper are Korbin Albert of Notre Dame and Jenna Nighswonger of Florida State.

The MAC Hermann Trophy is the most coveted individual honor in NCAA Division I soccer and has been awarded annually since 1967.

Cooper turned in the best overall season in NCAA Division I soccer in 2022 with 49 points, 19 goals and 11 assists.  A native of Clarkston, Mich., Cooper was the only player in the nation to rank in the top 10 in all three categories.  In the NCAA stats, Cooper ranked second in points (49), tied for second in goals (19) and tied for ninth in assists (11).  She was one of only two players in the country to collect 10 or more goals and assists this season.

Cooper scored or assisted on an impressive 10 game-winning goals on the season for the Blue Devils, while helping Duke (15-5-3) advance to the NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals.  She came up big in the NCAA Tournament for the Blue Devils, scoring six goals, which tied for an NCAA Tournament best, while her 13 points were the second-most in the tournament.

The United Soccer Coaches First-Team All-American, 2022 ACC Offensive Player of the Year and All-ACC First Team selection notched eight school records on the season – goals (19), points (49), multi-goal games (7), NCAA Tournament goals (6), NCAA Tournament points (13), alongside most goals (31) and points (78) through a sophomore season. She scored 12 goals and added six assists against nationally-ranked opponents.

The 2022 MAC Hermann Trophy banquet will be held at the historic Missouri Athletic Club in St. Louis on Jan. 6, 2023 to formally announce this year’s winners.
