CARSON, Calif. — The USC women’s soccer team’s season came to an end in heartbreaking fashion on Friday evening as the Trojans fell in PK’s to Wake Forest in the Quarterfinals of the NCAA Tournament.
The match was a 2-2 draw through regulation and two overtimes, but Wake Forest stopped two penalty kicks to advance 4-3.
The Demon Deacons held a 1-0 lead through the first half, but USC scored twice in the first 14 minutes of the second half to take the lead. Wake Forest would find a late equalizer in the 80th minute.
Simone Jackson scored the equalizing goal for USC in the 47th minute and Kayla Colbert followed with a strike in the 59th. Alex Wood evened things up for the visitors late in the half and Caiya Hanks, who scored the opening goal of the game, had the assist.
USC outshot Wake Forest 3-1 in overtime and 19-7 for the game.
The Trojans’ magical season comes to an end after winning a Big Ten title for the program’s first-ever outright conference championship and grabbing the program’s first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
