Cal Posts Comeback Win At No. 14 UNC In ACC First Round

Quarterfinal: TBA

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The California men’s soccer team was the only ACC team – out of 15 – that wasn’t awarded a penalty kick during the regular season. But, in the first round of the ACC Championship on Wednesday night at 14th-ranked North Carolina’s Dorrance Field, that didn’t matter. Tied 1-1 – after trailing 1-0 early – the Golden Bears earned the PK when Malcolm Zalayet was fouled in the box, and Alfredo Ortiz converted the chance to give the Bears a 2-1 lead it wouldn’t relinquish.

In Sunday’s ACC quarterfinal round, Cal plays the winner of Wednesday’s first-round match between third-seeded Duke and 14th-seeded Virginia Tech.

A full recap will follow.
