No. 18 Duke Draws No. 16 SMU Friday

DURHAM, N.C. – No. 18 Duke men’s soccer (4-2-3, 2-1-2 ACC) played to a 2-2 draw with No. 16 SMU (6-1-4, 2-1-1 ACC) on Friday at Koskinen Stadium.
 
After 43 minutes of action, Jose Ortega registered the first real chance of the evening, hitting the post. Less than a minute later, Ortega found the back of the net to open the scoring off of Ruben Mesalles‘ corner kick, 1-0.
 
At the half, Duke led the shot totals 9-5, with both teams registering shots on goal. The Blue Devils also held the advantage in corners 4-0. In the second half, Adam Luckhurst doubled the Duke lead, receiving a pass from Julius Suber who created the buildup from Mesalles, 2-0.
 
Late in the second half, SMU tallied two goals, including one in the 84th minute to tie the match. With one final chance, Duke pushed forward as Sol Arbib hit the crossbar on a header, finishing the match, 2-2.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Both sides had opportunities in the first half including hitting the post by Jose Ortega in the 43rd minute.
  • Following the opportunities generated in the last five minutes, Ortega opened the scoring by finishing a corner kick from Ruben Mesalles, 1-0.
