Soccer Notches First Ever Win in Big 12 Play in 2-0 Victory at Houston

HOUSTON – Standout freshman Kierra Blundell scored a goal in each half – her team-leading sixth and seventh of the season – and junior goalkeeper Pauline Nelles posted her fifth shutout of the season to help the Sun Devil soccer team capture its first ever win in Big 12 Conference play with a 2-0 victory over Houston on Thursday night.
 
Coming off their first loss of the season (1-0 at BYU on Sept. 12), the Sun Devils (6-1-2, 1-1  Big 12) were solid on both ends of the field. Offensively, the Sun Devils outshot the Cougars (3-4-1, 0-2) 16-11 and doubled them up in shots on goal (8-4). 

“I was very pleased with the team today,” ASU head coach Graham Winkworth said of the win. “It was a professional performance. We looked strong defensively and once again gave up very little in open play. I felt the backline were solid but also showed composure and confidence in their playing out the back.

 

“Houston set up in a system that was very difficult to break down but the team was patient and did not move away from our clear plan and style of play which really pleased me.
