Terps Fall To No. 5 Spartans In Big Ten Opener


COLLEGE PARK, MD – Maryland women’s soccer was defeated by No. 5 Michigan State 5-0 in its 2024 Big Ten opener at Ludwig Field on Sept. 12. 

The Terps could not reach the scoring column in the contest. They now sit at 3-2-4 on the season. 

Senior goalkeeper Liz Beardsley finished with four saves. Through nine games, she ranks among the top three in the Big Ten Conference with 34 saves. 

The Spartans scored goals in the second, sixth, 40th, 59th and 88th minutes. Each goal was scored by a different player. Bella Najera was credited with a goal and an assist and Justina Gaynor recorded two assists. 

Michigan State entered the match-up with a tough out of conference schedule. It had match-ups against No. 15 Notre Dame, No. 9 Arkansas and No. 15 Xavier. The Spartans improved to 6-0-2 in 2024.
