CLEMSON, S.C. – Virginia Tech opened ACC play with a 2-1 win at Clemson on Thursday night at Historic Riggs Field.

Anna Weir’s second goal of the season proved to be the game winner for the Hokies. Taylor Lewin also scored her first collegiate goal in the victory.

It is the first win over Clemson since 2014 for the Hokies and their first road win over the Tigers since 2012.

Virginia Tech begins the ACC slate with a win for the first time since 2021.

How it Happened
The first half saw several good looks by both teams, but the first 45 ended in a 0-0 draw. It was not until the second half that the Hokie offense came to life.

In the 64th minute, Anna Weir drilled a shot into the top corner of the net to give the Hokies a 1-0 lead. It was the second goal by Weir this season as she connected on a stellar pass from Natalie Mitchell.

Tech struck again not even seven minutes later as Taylor Lewin picked up a great upfield pass from Taylor Price and drilled it in to extend the Hokie lead. It was the rookie’s first collegiate goal.

Despite Clemson scoring in the 73rd minute, the Hokies’ defense shined throughout the rest of the contest. Lauren Hargrove made four saves over the final nine minutes of play, including a leaping save to deflect a shot high, to cement the 2-1 victory for the Hokies.

Tech’s two goals are the most the squad has scored against Clemson since a 2-2 tie with the Tigers on Oct. 1, 2016.
