Soccer Faces BYU on Thursday in Big 12 Opener


TEMPE – Thursday night will be a historic one for Arizona State as Sun Devil Soccer will face BYU in the first Big 12 game for any team in school history. South Field in Provo, Utah, will host the game starting at 6 p.m. AZT.

Arizona State finished its non-conference slate at 5-0-2 and they enter Thursday riding a four-game winning streak. The Sun Devils defeated LSU 5-2 in their only road game of the season. ASU has scored multiple goals in a game five times and ranks 27th in the country with an average of 2.71 goals per game. They are taking 18.86 shots per outing and put 46.2 percent of them on goal. Defensively, ASU has conceded just four goals while posting four shutouts. The opposition is taking 7.86 shots per game.

Kierra Blundell leads ASU with five goals and 13 points. Enasia Colon and Cameron Valladares have four goals and 11 points apiece. Keri Matthews has scored three times and each of these four players has tallied three assists.

Pauline Nelles holds a 0.57 goals-against-average and .852 save percentage in goal.

The Sun Devils are coming off a 2-1 win over Utah Tech last Sunday. Matthews gave ASU the lead in the 52nd minute, and Valladares found the winner in the 90th minute after Utah Tech tied the game in the 86th minute.

SERIES NOTES: BYU leads the all-time series 3-1. The teams last faced off during the 2005 season. The teams have split two meetings in Provo, with ASU winning 3-2 in 2004.

ABOUT BYU: Voted as the favorite to win the Big 12 after making a run to the College Cup last season, BYU sits a 2-3-2 on the year, having played one of the toughest schedules in the country.

Allie Fryer leads the Cougars with two goals, while Erin Bailey and Addie Gardner each have a goal and an assist. Lynette Hernaez has 36 saves while playing every minute in goal.

DOMINANT START: The Sun Devils went unbeaten in non-conference play for just the second time in program history (2022; 3-0-2). During the 5-0-2 performance, ASU outscored the opposition 19-4 with five multi-goal games and four shutouts.
