Maryland Begins B1G Play Against No. 5 Michigan State on Thursday

COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland opens its Big Ten slate with the middle match of a three-match home stand against No. 5 Michigan State.

The game will air on B1G+.

The Terrapins wrapped up their non-conference schedule with a 4-0 shutout of VCU at home on Sunday. Kennedy Bell scored twice in the first seven minutes of play, while Peyton Bernard tallied her first collegiate goal to put the Terps up 3-0 at the half. Delaney DeMartino added her second of the season in the 70th minute to cap the scoring. Liz Beardsley made seven stops to pick up her third clean sheet of the season.

Series History – Michigan State

  • The Terrapins and Spartans are fairly recent rivals with the first meeting coming in 2014 when Maryland joined the Big Ten. Michigan State holds a 4-2-3 advantage in the series, including three straight victories.
  • In last season’s game, the Spartans scored three first half goals and tacked on two in the second half to top Maryland, 5-0, in East Lansing. Liz Beardsley made five stops in net for the Terps.

Ringing the Bell Twice

  • Kennedy Bell’s two-goal performance in the Terps’ 4-0 win over VCU on Sept. 8 was the first time a Terp scored twice in a game since Lisa McIntyre scored twice against James Madison on Aug. 27, 2023.
  • Bell opened the scoring in the 5th minute, finishing a scramble inside the 8-meters. She added her second of the day less than two minutes later on a breakaway off of a beautifully paced through ball from Peyton Bernard.
  • Bell is the first Terp to score twice in the first half of a match since teammate Ava Morales found the net twice in the opening 45 minutes at Purdue on Oct. 23, 2022.
