SMU’s Mitchell, BC’s Gundelach Claim ACC Men’s Soccer Player of Week Honors

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – SMU sophomore midfielder Jaylinn Mitchell was named Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, and Boston College sophomore defender Moritz Gundelach was selected ACC Defensive Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.

Mitchell contributed to a goal in each of SMU’s matches against top-10 foes last weekend, recording a goal and an assist. The native of La Mirada, California, scored the eventual game winner in the Mustangs’ 1-0 victory over No. 6 Saint Louis on Thursday, marking the highest-ranked opponent an ACC team has defeated this season. He then created the Mustangs’ opening goal on Sunday in a 2-2 draw against No. 9 Denver with an individual run through the right wing leading to a cross to set up a Milton Lopez left-foot volley.

Gundelach played a key role on the back line during a 2-0-1 week for Boston College. A native of Stockstadt, Germany, Gundelach played all 90 minutes at center back in each of the three contests, proving to be instrumental in a tie against Big East member Providence along with the victories over Dartmouth and Merrimack. He also scored the opening goal in the 2-1 win against Dartmouth.

Conference play begins Friday, with six league matches slated this weekend. ACC Network features a doubleheader on Friday evening, with Duke at Virginia at 6 p.m. ET and Cal at NC State at 8 p.m. ET.
