CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Miami freshman forward Giovana Canali was selected the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week and Virginia Tech senior defender Allie George was chosen the Defensive Player of the Week for matches played August 26-September 1.
Canali scored key goals in each of Miami’s two victories last week, headlined by a game-winning goal in Sunday’s 1-0 home win over FIU on Sunday. The Boca Raton, Florida, native found the back of the net in the 69th minute to seal the win over the Hurricanes’ in-state rival. Prior to the game winner against FIU, the freshman scored the first goal in Miami’s 2-1 victory over Missouri last Thursday, as her strike in the 39th minute gave Miami an early lead. Canali’s three goals this season ranks second among all ACC freshmen.
George was a staple along the backline that recorded a pair of shutouts and scored two key goals following set pieces to help Virginia Tech remain unbeaten on the season. In Thursday’s rain-shortened victory over Loyola Maryland, the Louisville, Kentucky, native helped hold the Greyhounds without a shot for the entire match and eventually scored the contest’s only goal in the 74th minute. The goal marked George’s first tally since October 6, 2022. On Sunday, George added a late insurance goal in the 90th minute as the Hokies fended off High Point, 2-0. George and the Virginia Tech backline held the Panthers to just six shots with three going on frame.
ACC Women’s Soccer continues Thursday, September 5, when a pair of in-state rivalries will be featured on linear networks. Beginning at 7 p.m. ET, North Carolina will visit Duke in a non-conference tilt on ACC Network, while Clemson heads to South Carolina on ESPNU. On Sunday, September 8, women’s soccer on ACCN continues when Marquette travels to Notre Dame for a 1:30 p.m. ET kickoff.
