UW Takes Over In Second Half, Drops UC Irvine 2-0

SEATTLE Ioanna Papatheodorou and Radisson Banks posted second half goals Sunday as Washington picked up its first win of the 2024 season, topping UC Irvine 2-0 at Husky Soccer Stadium.
 
The Huskies dictated the pace of play for the majority of the match, racking up a 16-8 advantage in shots, including 10-2 in the first half.
 
Making her first career start, junior goalkeeper Mia Hamant earned a decisive clean sheet, stopping all four Anteater shots on goal.
 
Washington started the match slightly on the back foot as UC Irvine took control in the early minutes. However, the Dawgs quickly found their footing and began to apply pressure as the first half wore on.
 
10 minutes in, it appeared the Huskies had an early lead through Kelsey Branson. However, the flag on the far sideline came up, chalking off the San Diego native’s tidy finish.
 
Tatum Thomason came just a foot or two short of putting UW on top in the 27th minute, collecting Kalea Eichenberger’s feed at the top of the 18, chopping onto her left foot and firing just over the crossbar.
