Miami Falls 1-0 at Princeton – University of Miami Athletics

Giovana Canali

PRINCETON, N.J. – The University of Miami soccer team fell on the road 1-0 to Princeton Saturday evening after conceding a second half goal.

“I absolutely loved watching this group compete tonight,” said Head Coach Ken Masuhr. “We executed a number of things in our game plan that just fell short. This team is getting better every outing and is a moment or two away from being rewarded for their hard work. We are committed to progress and while tonight was hard, we will learn from it.”

After a relatively slow start over the first 15 minutes, the Canes began to dominate possession, resulting in a multitude of opportunities to score.

Giovana Canali created the first prime offensive chance for Miami, sneaking past the Princeton back line and chasing down an excellent pass from Ciara Alcaron. Canali made a move and ripped a shot towards the lower left side of the foal, forcing the Princeton goalkeeper to make a save.

Shortly after Cananli’s opportunity, Kyla Gallagher sent a beautiful cross past the Tigers defense that found the foot of JJ Ndaw. Like Canali, Ndaw put a shot on frame; however, Princeton came up with another save.

Near the end of the half, Moira Flynn made an incredible play, running down a long pass from Tori Grambo and splitting two Princeton defenders before taking a shot that was blocked near the goal.

Despite the plethora of chances, Miami entered the half tied with Princeton 0-0.

The Canes picked up right where they left off to begin the second period, as they continued to test the Tigers and control the pace of the game; but, Princeton responded by scoring a goal in the 63rd minute to build a 1-0 lead.

With the momentum swinging in Princeton’s favor, and Miami on their heels, the Canes refused to give in, as they attempted to respond by heavily pressing their attack over the final 20 minutes.

Miami’s offense showed tremendous resiliency and determination; but, they were unable to find the back of the net, falling to Princeton by a final score of 1-0.

Miami is set to return home to host Missouri this Thursday at 7 p.m.
