Huskies Fall In Season Opener

PORTLAND, Ore. – Washington dropped its season opener at No. 22 Portland, 2-1, on Friday night at Merlo Field.
 
Washington (0-1-0) outshot Portland (1-0-0), 10-8, with seven shots on goal. Jadon Bowton recorded three saves, the most for the senior since he also had three against Cal in October 2022.
 
Portland jumped out to an early 1-0 lead with a goal by Sebastian Nava in the sixth minute.
 
Five minutes later, Washington responded with Charlie Kosakoff’s second career goal in the 11th minute off assists by Rhys Gourdie and Joe Dale.

The Pilots retook the lead in the 61st minute on a goal from Nicholas Dunbar.

 

True freshman Gabe Fernandez made his collegiate debut coming on as a sub in the 66th minute for Chris Meyers. Five more Huskies made their debut in the Purple and Gold in Gourdie, Egor Akulov, Caden Buckley, Connor Lofy and Conner Leber.

 

Up next, the Huskies host No. 4 Oregon State on Monday night. Kickoff from Husky Soccer Stadium is set for 8 p.m. and airing on Big Ten Network.
