Cal Draws With Gonzaga 1-1

BERKELEY – The California women’s soccer team tied Gonzaga 1-1 in the two programs’ first meeting Thursday afternoon at Edwards Stadium.
 
The Golden Bears’ first tie of the season gives them a 1-1-1 record while Gonzaga heads into the weekend at 0-1-1.
 
Grad transfer Kelly McManus earned her first start between the posts and did not disappoint collecting a career-high seven saves. Despite seven shots by the Bulldogs in the first half, McManus kept the Bulldogs off the scoreboard with four saves in the opening period/
 
After falling behind in their first two matches of the year the Bears took a 0-0 tie into the locker room, but still emerged in the second half as if they were trailing. Outshooting the Bulldogs 8-4 in the period, Cal got on the board quickly with a go-ahead goal in the 50th minute.
 
Senior Velize King sprinted up the right sideline with the ball and after gaining a step on her defender, fired a low cross through the 18-yard box. The ball rolled parallel to the goal and just evaded the outstretched arms of Gonzaga keeper Lauren Towne who dove in hopes of breaking up the play. Waiting just on the other side was senior Alexis Wright who tapped it in for her first goal of the season. King earned the assist, her first of the season.
