No. 7 Panthers Open Home Slate Thursday Against Buffalo


PITTSBURGH – The University of Pittsburgh nationally ranked women’s soccer team (1-0-1, 0-0-0 ACC) will officially open their home slate Thursday evening as they play host to the Buffalo Bulls (1-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG 4). Thursday’s matchup is set for a 5 p.m. kickoff at Ambrose Urbanic Field.

THE SERIES

  • Thursday evening’s matchup will be the seventh time the Panthers have met the Bulls with Pitt holding a 5-1 edge to Buffalo. 
  • Last time out, the Panthers opening their season with a 2-1 victory over the Bulls. Buffalo has not secured a win against the Panthers since 1996. 
  • Pitt plans to continue their winning streak against the Bulls this Thursday evening.

SCOUTING THE BULLS

  • The Bulls kicked off their 2024 campaign with a victory over St. Bonaventure in a 1-0 shutout, Thursday night. 
  • Midfielder Kelly Severini put up the game-winning goal in the 80th minute in her first match as a Buffalo Bull. This game-winning goal was assisted by Maya Galko. Buffalo also saw seven Bulls put up shots on goal with three posting two each. 
  • Goalkeeper Lexie Thompson played the full 90 minutes on the pitch – putting up on save to secure the win for Buffalo. 
  • The Bulls outshot the Bonnies 23-2 with a 10-1 edge in shots on goal, and a 9-0 corner kick advantage. 

RECAPPING PITT’S FIRST VICTORY OF THE SEASON

  • The Panther posted their first victory of the season on Sunday afternoon as they took down the Duquesne Dukes, 2-1, at Highmark Stadium in front of 1250 fans. 
  • Pitt battled back and forth with the Dukes in the first 45 minutes of play. 
  • The Panthers went into the locker room at the half holding the edge in total shots, 9-5, and shots on goal, 3-2, with a total possession of 66 percent. 
  • Coming out for the second half, the Panthers were ready for more. 
  • Senior Sarah Schupanksy put Pitt on the board first in the 63rd minute after a quick assist from sophomore Sage Stelzer
