Newcastle to loan full-back out as Eddie Howe considers Chelsea outcast as replacement

Newcastle United are reportedly prepared to let Matt Targett leave on loan before the close of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies have hopes of bringing in a new centre-back but have seen four bids for Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi rejected.

While it remains to be seen if the northeast giants will return with a fifth, and improved, offer for the England international, according to recent reports, Eddie Howe is continuing to trim his squad.

Matt Targett to leave Newcastle on loan

TBR Football claim Targett, 28, is a candidate to leave St. James’ Park with the Eastleigh-born full-back wanted by Nottingham Forest, Brentford and former clubs Fulham and Southampton.

Matt Targett can leave Newcastle United on loan.

The 28-year-old joined from Aston Villa just two years ago but endured an injury-plagued campaign last season meant he started just one Premier League game.

Having slipped down in the pecking order with Howe preferring Lewis Hall, Targett’s time with the Geordies could be coming to an end — at least for now anyway.

CaughtOffside understands Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell has been internally discussed as an option to bring in before the August 30th deadline.

The English full-back has been made available for transfer after Enzo Maresca admitted he needed to move on to get more playing time.
