COLLEGE PARK, MD — Maryland hosts its second consecutive home match as it welcomes American to College Park. The Terrapins are coming off a 2-2 draw in their home opener on Sunday against Stony Brook.

The game will air on B1G+.

After opening its 2024 season with a 2-0 win over Lehigh, Maryland got its home schedule started against Stony Brook. The Terps got the scoring started early, as Kelsey Smith picked up her first collegiate goal in the second minute. A penetrating pass from Ava Morales gave Smith a clear run on goal, with Smith chipping the ball over the keeper to give the Terps the lead. Stony Brook would answer in the 10th minute to level the game at 1-1. Just before halftime, Lisa McIntyre pounced on a loose ball near the penalty area, starting her account in the 2024 season with a finesse shot around the goalie to put the Terps back on top. Stony Brook answered, scoring in the 43rd minute to make it a 2-2 game at the half. Liz Beardsley made some crucial saves for the Terps in the second half, including a diving stop in the 53rd minute to keep the game level. 

Series History – American

  • The Terrapins and the Eagles have met nine times in the all-time series, with the Terps holding the advantage with a record of 6-0-3. The two teams met last season in an opening season match, playing to a 0-0 draw at American.
  •  It was a defensive battle for most of the game, as both teams’ kept either offense from generating many chances. Both teams notched three attempts on goal in the game. Goalkeeper Liz Beardsley made her debut for the Terps, making a pair of saves en route to the shutout.

Liz Beardsley was in goal for last season’s match against American, which ended in a 0-0 draw. It was the first of six shutouts for the goalkeeper during the 2023 season

Season-Opening Success

  •  In Maryland’s 2-0 win over Lehigh, the Terps extended their unbeaten streak in season openers to eight. In those eight games, the Terps have a record of 5-0-3.
