Gaynor Named Big Ten Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week

ROSEMONT, Ill. – Michigan State women’s soccer graduate student Justina Gaynor was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the conference Tuesday.

Gaynor earns the league’s first defensive player of the week award of the season after scoring the game-winning goal in MSU’s season-opening 2-1 win at No. 15 Notre Dame, starting and playing 77 minutes at center back. The win was the Spartans’ first over the Fighting Irish since 1989 and just the third win overall in the 16-game series.

The Shelby Township, Michigan, native collects the first Big Ten weekly honor of her career and the first defensive weekly award from the conference for the Spartans since Regan Dalton on Oct. 10 last season.

MSU hosts Arkansas in its home opener at DeMartin Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. on Big Ten Network.
