Four Women’s Soccer Alums Kick Off USL Super League


PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Four Rutgers women’s soccer alumni were part of the historic opening weekend of the United Soccer League’s (USL) Super League dedicated to the growth of women’s soccer in the United States.
 
The USL Super League is a Division One professional women’s soccer league, operated by the United Soccer League, the largest and fastest-growing pre-professional and professional soccer organization in the United States. Built for the future of women’s soccer, the USL Super League has committed to U.S. Soccer’s Division One standards, reflecting its collective vision to be a global leader on and off the field while providing more opportunities for more women in more communities. The inaugural 2024 season will feature eight teams with additional teams set to join in subsequent seasons.
 
Rutgers women’s soccer graduates Meagan McClelland (Carolina Ascent FC), Sam Kroeger (Brooklyn FC), Kristen Edmonds (Tampa Bay Sun FC), and Taylor Aylmer (Spokane Zephyr FC) were part of a historic inaugural weekend that saw McClelland record the league’s first shutout in front of a sellout crowd (10,553) in Charlotte, setting a record for the single-game pro women’s soccer attendance in the Carolinas.
 
After graduating with the NCAA’s second all-time minutes played for a goalkeeper, McClelland (Class of ’23) was rostered by the Chicago Red Stars and Gotham FC of the NWSL before playing pro soccer in Denmark. McClelland earned 43 solo shutouts, 49 team shutouts, a 0.69 goals-against average and an .801 save percentage during her five seasons at RU.
 
Kroeger (Class of ’24), earning her first professional contract in 2024, was a Regional All-American and Scholar All-Region selection with 45 points scored on 15 goals and 15 assists “On the Banks.”
 
Aylmer played for Rutgers from 2016-19 and was a consistent source of leadership and production. Getting it done on and off the pitch with All-Region honors as a player and a scholar, Aylmer graduated and signed with NJ/NY Gotham FC of the NWSL in 2021.
 
Edmonds (Class of ’09) is Rutgers’ longest tenured professional player having been in the NWSL since 2011. She started off her Rutgers career with incredible momentum by becoming the first rookie to lead the Scarlet Knights in scoring since Carli Lloyd.
