No. 7 Pitt Women’s Soccer Prepped for Matchup Against Duquesne


PITTSBURGH – The No. 7 Pitt women’s soccer team (0-0-1, 0-0-0 ACC) is ready to face off against city neighbor Duquesne (1-0-0, 0-0-0 Atlantic 10) Sunday afternoon at Highmark Stadium. Sunday’s match will kick at 3:00 pm for a city battle.

THE SERIES

  • This meeting marks the 17th overall matchup between the two Pittsburgh programs.
  • The Panthers currently hold a 12-4 lead to the Dukes.
  • Last time out, the Panthers took down the Dukes 6-1 at home in front of 939 fans.

SCOUTING DUKES

  • The Dukes opened their 2024 season with a 6-2 victory over Mercyhurst, Thursday night. 
  • The Duquesne Dukes completed their 2023 season run in the Atlantic 10 Championship tournament semifinals. The team fell to top ranked Saint Louis in a 5-0 shutout.
  • The Dukes finished the season with an 8-8-4 record – their highest win total since 2017.
  • Duquesne is returning three of their top scorers in junior forwards Maya Matesa and Brianna Moore along with sophomore midfielder Anna Bundy.

RECAPPING THE OPENING DRAW

  • Pitt opened their 2024 campaign with a nail-biting 0-0 tie with the No. 14 ranked Georgia Bulldogs, Thursday evening.
  • The Panthers played tough for 90 minutes and outshot the Bulldogs 18-10 in the contest, with a five to four edge in shots on goal.
  • This was the first time since 2016 that Pitt did not open the season with a win, however it also marks the first time in those eight years that the season began against a ranked opponent.

UP NEXT

  • The Panthers will officially open their home slate on Thursday, Aug. 22 where they will play host to Buffalo at Ambrose Urbanic Field. The matchup is set to kickoff at 5:00 pm.
