No. 20 Duke Surges to 3-1 Victory Over No. 16 Georgetown


DURHAM, N.C. – No. 20 Duke men’s soccer surged in the second half of Friday’s final exhibition, scoring two goals to down No. 16 Georgetown, 3-1, at Koskinen Stadium. The Blue Devils complete the preseason 2-0-1 and begin the 2024 season in San Diego, California, against San Diego and UC San Diego.
 
The Blue Devils and the Hoyas played an extra 45-minute period on Friday, with Cameron Kerr receiving a pass from Andrew Myerson to net an extra-period goal. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the ninth minute of the match, Georgetown opened the scoring with a right-footed shot from just inside the penalty area, 1-0.
  • Following a strong buildup in the midfield, Drew Kerr rocketed a shot from the left side, beating the keeper to level the scoring, 1-1.
  • Duke ended the first half leading the Hoyas in shots 10-4, while also taking the only corner of the first half.
  • To begin the second half, the Blue Devils created chances on net, before Adam Luckhurst was awarded a penalty kick in the 64th minute, 2-1.
  • With time dwindling in the second half, the Blue Devils created a strong buildup as Ulfur Bjornsson used a strong left-footed chance that the Georgetown keeper spilled, to free Luke Thomas for Duke’s third goal of the evening.

 
NOTES

  • Duke registered 16 shots in Friday’s contest, outshooting the Hoyas 16-5.
  • The Blue Devils created eight corners on the night, holding the Hoyas without an attempt.
  • Graduate student Adam Luckhurst netted his third preseason goal, converting on the penalty kick in the 64th minute.
  • Junior Drew Kerr tallied his second preseason goal, leveling the match at one a side. 
  • Graduate student Luke Thomas cleaned up a mess in front of the net, converting on the keeper’s spilled chance to give the Blue Devils a 3-1 lead late in the match.
  • Duke completes the preseason 2-0-1, earning victories against Coastal Carolina and Georgetown.
