Badgers drop season opener | Wisconsin Badgers

UCONN

PROVO, Utah – The No. 19 Wisconsin women’s soccer team opened up the 2024 season at No. 3 BYU on Thursday night. The Badgers dropped to the Cougars 1-0.

How it happened

First Half

Wisconsin started the game with nine returning starters, while BYU only saw two in the lineup.

UW wasted no time raiding the Cougar’s third in a 3-5-2 formation, taking two shots and drawing a corner.

Goalkeeper Drew Stover was put to the test with BYU’s first shot attempt in the ninth minute.

Staying relentless, Ella Ottey had an attempt at a goal in the 14th minute, but a diving save from BYU kept the score 0-0.

In the first 15 minutes, UW had a 5-1 shots advantage and 2-0 on corners.

BYU found a gap in the Badgers’ defense in the 17th minute to capitalize on the first and only goal of the game.

Going into the locker room, UW had a pair of shots-on-goal and saves besides six corner kicks.

Second Half

Switching things up in the second half, Adee Boer, Delaney Cox, and Aidan McConnell started the second 45.

With another corner forced in the 53rd minute, Cox tried to get the equalizer but could not capitalize on the shot.

A BYU handball in the 60th gave Wisconsin a prime opportunity to score on a penalty kick. Aryssa Mahrt took the shot, but the BYU goalkeeper was too much.

UW continued to badger BYU in the last five minutes, taking two more shots.

Although the score did not go in favor of UW, the Badgers led in shots (17-7), shots-on-goal (6-3), and corner kicks (12-1).
