No. 20 Duke Defeats UNC Asheville 7-1 on Tuesday


DURHAM, N.C. – Behind four first-half goals, No. 20 Duke men’s soccer defeated UNC Asheville, 7-1 at Koskinen Stadium on Tuesday evening. Graduate students Cameron Kerr and Adam Luckhurst led the charge with two goals aside, while freshman Adrian Byasiima tallied his first points of the preseason. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the eighth minute, Adam Luckhurst was awarded a penalty kick after a UNC Asheville handball in the box. 
  • Kamran Acito doubled the scoring in the 13th minute, cleaning up a saved header and slotting it into the bottom right corner.
  • In the 15th minute, Drew Kerr tallied his first goal of the preseason, slotting a left-footed from just outside the box into the bottom left corner to increase the Blue Devils’ lead to 3-0. The goal was assisted by brother Cameron Kerr.
  • Duke added to their first-half lead in the 25th minute, when Niclas Wittur received a pass from Ruben Mesalles at the top of the box, 4-0. 
  • Kerr slotted his second goal of the evening right after half, receiving a pass from Ulfur Bjornsson and Adam Luckhurst to increase the Duke lead to 5-0.
  • Minutes later in the 47th minute, Luckhurst doubled his goal total in the preseason, stealing a clearance from the Asheville keeper and depositing it into the back of the net, 6-0.
  • In the 66th minute, the freshman combination of Julius SuberJamie Kabussu, and Adrian Byasiima tallied the seventh and final goal of the night, 7-0.
  • UNC Asheville produced their first goal of the night in the 84th minute. 

 
NOTES

  • Duke held the advantage in corner kicks on the night, 11-1, tallying six in the first half and five in the second half.
  • Graduate student Wessel Speel played the first 45 minutes of the contest, making one save.
  • Sophomore goalkeeper Nathan Gaviser played the second half of the game, making two saves.
  • The Blue Devils outshot the Bulldogs 14-5 on the night, with eight in the first half. 

 
UP NEXT

  • No. 20 Duke returns home to the friendly confines of Koskinen Stadium to face off in the final exhibition match against No. 16 Georgetown.
