Virgil van Dijk demands new signings in update on Liverpool contract

Virgil van Dijk has revealed he has still not been offered a new contract with Liverpool despite entering the last 12 months of his existing deal, while he is eager for the club to make fresh signings.

The Netherlands international, who signed for the Merseyside outfit in 2018, has been pivotal to the club’s success in recent years. He made 48 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign and notably scored the winning goal against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final – Jurgen Klopp’s final trophy with Liverpool.

Van Dijk is set to begin the upcoming campaign under new head coach Arne Slot. Speaking after Sunday’s pre-season friendlies against Sevilla and Las Palmas, he claimed no progress has been made over a new contract and called on the club to get busy in the transfer market.

“There is no changes at the moment,” he said when asked whether a new contract has been offered. “Obviously I think we should make some signings based on how long the season will go, but I think they are working behind the scenes and I am fully convinced and trust the club that they will do the right thing for us and get the best possible squad in order to compete in every competition that we are in.

“That is the main thing I am focusing on, having the trust and we will see what happens. I think they are working very hard behind the scenes, we will see how that pans out.

“We go as far as we can and that’s the aim. I have ambitions, we all have ambitions. We all want to achieve the best that we can. We’re participating in each competition to try and win it. It’s almost impossible to do that but we are ready for the start of the Premier League and then we hopefully grow into the season and do very well.”

Van Dijk featured in Liverpool’s 4-1 triumph over Sevilla before sitting out their 0-0 draw with Las Palmas in Sunday’s double-header at Anfield.

The Reds begin their 2024/25 Premier League campaign on Saturday when they travel to newly-promoted Ipswich Town.
