Panthers Placed No. 8 in ACC Preseason Coaches Poll


PITTSBURGH – The Pitt women’s soccer program was picked eighth in the 2024 ACC Women’s Soccer Preseason Coaches poll, announced by the league Thursday.

Senior Sarah Schupanksy and sophomore Deborah Abiodun were named to the preseason All-ACC Team. This is both of their first times on the preseason team. 

Schupansky started in 22 out of a record 24 games played during the 2023 season – totaling 1633 minutes on the pitch. She was tied at the top for most goals on the team with her 11 on the season. The Pittsburgh, PA native holds the single season points record after registering those 11 goals and 14 assists to total 36 points. She racked in numerous honors last season including United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American Second team, All-ACC First Team TopDrawerSoccer Best XI Second Team, College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team and United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Second Team and a TopDrawerSoccer Post season ranking coming in at No. 13.

Abiodun started in 19 games out of 24 played last season – registering 1424 total minutes played. She recorded 15 points off of six goals and three assists – including the game winning goal against Ohio State in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament. The Oyo, Nigeria native wrote up an extensive freshman career resume as she earned a spot on the All-ACC Third Team and Freshmen Team, United Soccer Coaches All-Atlantic Region Team and TopDrawerSoccer Best XI Second Freshmen Team for her efforts last season.

Florida State earned 15 first place votes, totaling 255 points. Stanford (235), Notre Dame (211), North Carolina (187), and Clemson (186) all finished in the Top-5. Virginia (177) took sixth with Duke (175) right behind them in seventh. The Panthers come up next with their 168 points, topping their 103 points from last season’s preseason poll. Wake Forest (160), Virginia Tech (116), California (111), NC State (85), Louisville (80), Boston College (50, SMU (50), Miami (44) and Syracuse (22) all rounded out the remainder of the Preseason Coaches Poll.

The Panthers are set to host their final exhibition game of the season this Saturday, Aug. 10 at 5 p.m. against Michigan. Admission is free to all fans.
