‘It is where he grew up, and where his footballing adventure began. A city that saw a boy become a man and an elite athlete, who won virtually everything in the world of football.

‘He made the city proud of his progress as a player, and above all as a person.

Nani joined United in 2007 from Sporting Lisbon and went on to spend eight years at Old Trafford. During this time he won four Premier League titles, two League Cups, the Champions League and the Club World Cup.

After leaving United in 2015, he had spells at Fenerbahce, Valencia and Lazio before moving to the US to play for Orlando City.

A return to Italy followed as he joined Venezia prior to transfers to Melbourne Victory and Adana Demirspor.

He departed Demirspor at the end of last season, and is now back in his homeland to play for Estrela, who finished 14th in Portugal’s top division in 2023-24.

Nani also owns fourth division side SU Sintrense – a team based near Amadora – after buying the club last month.
