Kelter leads Team USA to bronze at 2024 Summer Olympics

PARIS – Former Wisconsin women’s hockey and soccer standout Alev Kelter helped the U.S. women’s rugby squad win bronze at the 2024 Summer Olympics, the team’s best-ever finish in the event, on Tuesday night in Paris.

A native of Eagle River, Alaska, Kelter scored three tries during the tournament, including a try in Team USA’s 14-12 win over Australia in the bronze-medal match, in her third appearance at the Summer Olympics.

Kelter scored a try that went viral in Team USA’s 24-5 win over Brazil in pool play that helped secure a trip to the quarterfinals.

Kelter put the U.S. up 5-0 early on in its semifinal against New Zealand on Tuesday, the first time the U.S. men or women have competed in the rugby semifinal at the Olympic Games. However New Zealand would score 24-straight points en route to a 24-12 triumph.

In the bronze medal match, Kelter scored late in the first half and added a conversion to knot the match at 7-7 heading into halftime. Australia scored to go up 12-7 with less than 90 seconds remaining but Alex Sedrick’s try and conversion in stoppage time gave the U.S. its first-ever medal in the event.

During her time at Wisconsin, Kelter won a NCAA title with women’s hockey while helping the women’s soccer team to three NCAA tournament appearances, including a run to the Sweet 16.

Kelter is the first Badger to win a medal at this year’s Olympics and captured the school’s 18th bronze medal at the Olympics.
