Blue Devils in the Paris Olympics Recap – July 25

FRANCE – The 2024 Olympics in Paris opened this week with soccer kicking things off for the Duke Athletics representatives.  Here is a recap from action on July 25 in France.
 
Quinn, Canada Earn 2-1 Victory to Open Olympics
Canada opened its Olympic action Thursday with a, 2-1, come-from-behind victory over New Zealand.  After giving up a goal in the 13th minute to New Zealand, Canada registered the equalizer in the 45th minute as Cloe Lacasse connected on the goal just before halftime. 
 
In the second half, Evelyne Viens registered the game-winner in the 67th minute to give Canada the victory. 
 
Quinn, a 2018 Duke graduate, received the start for Canada in the midfield and saw action in 67 minutes.  Canada will next face France on July 28 at 3 p.m.
 
Payne, Nigeria Fall in Olympic Action to Brazil, 1-0
In a tight battle with Brazil on Thursday, Nigeria dropped a 1-0 decision to open Olympic action in France.  Gabi Nunes registered the game-winner in the 37th for Brazil and held off the Nigerians in the second half for the victory. 
 
Nigeria outshot Brazil, 15-11, for the match. 
 
Duke’s 2017 graduate Toni Payne made her Olympic debut and earned the start for Nigeria in the loss.  Payne went on to play 67 minutes and attempted one shot.  Nigeria will next face Spain on July 28 at 1 p.m.
