Man Utd’s stance on future Gareth Southgate appointment revealed

Erik ten Hag

Manchester United are ‘highly unlikely’ to pursue former England boss Gareth Southgate if they decide to replace Erik ten Hag in the near future, a report has revealed.

Southgate announced on Tuesday he would resign as Three Lions boss after his side fell to a 2-1 defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final. The fixture marked the nation’s second-successive tournament final following their penalty shootout loss to Italy in 2021.

Even before revealing his plans to leave the England camp, Southgate had been linked with a move to Old Trafford as a replacement for under-fire manager Ten Hag.

United have since tied the Dutchman down to a contract extension which will see him lead the Red Devils until 2026. However, even if they do falter at the start of the 2023/24 season, the club will not make a move for Southgate, according to the Daily Mail.

While United will focus all their attention into ensuring Ten Hag’s reign is successful, they would instead look towards Thomas Tuchel if they hit a sticky spell and need a replacement. The former Chelsea boss was among one of the many names considered to replace Ten Hag earlier this summer after making the decision to leave Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.

The club are ‘highly unlikely’ to favour a move for Southgate, even though he is well liked by INEOS and Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

United have already begun to strengthen their current squad to ensure Ten Hag can succeed. The club announced the signing of Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee on Sunday, offering more options in attack.

Meanwhile, reports have claimed United are closing in on the signing of Leny Yoro ahead of Real Madrid. The Lille defender has agreed to travel to England to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.
