Lazio president Claudio Lotito has claimed Juventus and Napoli are both trying to hijack his move for Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood.
United have informed Greenwood, who saw charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive control dropped before a season-long loan to Getafe, that he has no future at Old Trafford and they are in talks with a number of clubs over a summer sale.
French giants Marseille are reported to have struck a deal to sign Greenwood, although the city’s mayor has publicly urged the club not to go through with the transfer because of the history of allegations against the forward.
Lazio are hoping to win the race for Greenwood’s signature but Lotito told Il Messaggero that there are a number of clubs also trying to steal a march.
“I offered €25m plus 50% of the resale, plus bonuses and commissions,” Lotito revealed. “And yet several clubs have entered to make a disturbance,
“Juventus, Napoli… it seems that everyone is jinxing it. They are terrified we could take him and they want to ruin everything.
“Yes, I said there’s another target who is ten times stronger than Greenwood, but you know that sometimes I play. It’s true, but I do have another young name hidden.”
Marseille are understood to have struck a deal worth £27.6m (€31.8m) inclusive of bonuses, and it is not yet clear whether Lazio’s bonuses would match the fee on offer from the French side.
Greenwood has spoken with United officials at the club’s Carrington training ground this summer for confirmation that his future lies away from the club.
New Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi has publicly defended Greenwood ahead of a possible move, with some reports suggesting Greenwood’s preference would be to move to the French side.
