Virgil van Dijk makes admission on Liverpool future after Euro 2024 heartbreak

Virgil van Dijk has revealed he will contemplate his future with both Liverpool and the Netherlands this summer after his nation’s Euro 2024 exit to England.

The Dutchman saw his side exit the tournament in Germany on Wednesday night despite taking the lead in the semi-final through Xavi Simons, with Harry Kane equalising from the penalty spot before Ollie Watkins struck in the 91st minute.

Van Dijk, who was critical of referee Felix Zwayer at full-time, revealed he will now mull over his next steps at both club and international level. The 33-year-old has another season left on his deal at Anfield and revealed back in May that the arrival of Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement as manager meant talks over a new deal haven’t taken place.

He told reporters: “I haven’t the slightest idea right now. I will think carefully this summer about what I want at club level and as an international player. Then we’ll go for it again, but first recover from this.

“After a season like this, where all kinds of things have happened, it gets emotional at the end because you know it’s over.”

Van Dijk’s Liverpool experienced a poignant 2023/24 season as long-time manager Klopp departed. They had hoped for Premier League and Europa League glory to accompany their Carabao Cup success in February, but the Merseysiders fell behind eventual domestic champions Manchester City and runners-up Arsenal towards the end of the campaign and were dumped out of Europe by Atalanta, who went on to win the competition.

The former Southampton and Celtic defender has made 270 appearances in all competitions for the Reds, winning a number of trophies including the Premier League and Champions League. He has also played 74 times for the Netherlands since making his international debut in 2015, scoring nine goals.
